Cedar Chips In Dog House - The Perfect Dog House

Ideally you will want and be able to keep your dog inside. Unfortunately that isn’t always the case. Perhaps you have a new baby, or your dog has got too big for your house, or you have an elderly relative moving in and you are concerned about your dog being around the house. The first solution is not to throw your dog out of the house and into the yard without a roof over his head.

If circumstances dictate that your dog has to live outside for extended periods of time it is important to provide a dog house so your dog can live comfortably and safely. In fact even if your dog is allowed in the house, a dog house is still an excellent idea if your dog has to spend extended periods outside during the day. A dog house will provide warmth on cold days, shade on sunny days and keep him dry in the rain as well as providing security.

How to choose the perfect dog house

The first consideration when choosing the dog house is the size of your dog. While it may seem obvious, getting a dog house that’s too small just will not work J Similarly don’t get a dog house that’s too big. Your dog will not want to sleep in a big cavernous open space. The dog house should be big enough to allow your dog to turn around and stretch.  Consider the favourite areas in the house where your dog likes to curl up and sleep, (apart from your bed!!) and look at matching this space. You will find that your dog likes to be in his dog bed, or perhaps on the landing or curled up in a corner. You want your dog to feel safe and comfortable in his new dog house.

The next thing to think about is the climate that you live in. If you live in a cold or snowy climate you’ll need to look at dog houses that are well insulated and are waterproof. To keep your dog warm on those really cold nights you can treat him to a heated dog bed - mmmmmmm.  (See All about Dog beds for more details on dog beds).

On the other hand if you live in a really hot climate you should look at dog houses that have good ventilation. There are dog houses on the market that are raised off the ground so that air can flow under the dog house and keep it well ventilated. If that isn’t enough and your dog is still hot you can buy dog houses with air conditioning! You do need to look at the door though and make sure it seals well to help keep the electricity bills to a minimum. Who knows, maybe next they’ll install flat screen TV’s too!!

Portable dog houses

For those of you who do not need a permanent dog house you should look at portable dog houses. This type of dog house is similar to a small tent. It can be taken down easily and packs small and light for ease of transport. Be aware that these dog houses are not designed to withstand extreme weather.  They are usually constructed of good breathable material similar to a tent so they make good dog houses for travelling. If you decide to take to the road with your dog and his portable dog house it would be a good idea to get your dog used to it at home first so that he feels comfortable in his dog house.

Some thoughts on DIY dog houses

The handymen amongst you may want to try building your own custom dog house. There are many basic plans available across the internet for you to choose from. You need to be aware that this may not be the cheapest option available to you especially if you’re not a dab hand with the woodwork. Once you have completed your dog house make sure it’s waterproof and stable before you let your dog use it. Whichever route you decide to go there will be a dog house out there that suits your needs.
